The purpose of the Linking Education and Practice for Excellence in Public Health Nursing Project (LEAP Project) is to improve competency for public health nursing practice in a changing public health system by educating public health nurses, student nurses, and nursing faculty in the knowledge and skills required for providing population-based, culturally competent public health nursing services. (NEPR Practice Priority Area Purpose P-3).

The overarching goal of this project is to contribute to population health improvement and the reduction of health disparities by developing a sufficient, highly skilled, diverse, and visible public health nursing workforce in Wisconsin. This statewide, collaborative public health nursing workforce education and practice improvement project will address needs for new knowledge and skills in population-based public health nursing practice among students, faculty, and practicing public health nurses. The project is expected to have a direct impact on nurses in local, state, and tribal public health departments, and on student nurses and faculty in nursing education programs in all areas of the state.

The LEAP Project has three primary goals:

  1. The project will increase the percent of students graduating from nursing education programs educated in basic concepts and skills required for providing nursing services with a population-based public health practice perspective.

  2. Activities addressing this aim will include:
  3. The project will assure that nurses beginning public health nursing practice develop competencies required for population-based, culturally competent public health nursing practice.

  4. Activities addressing this aim include:
  5. The project aims to improve the competency for population-based, culturally competent public health practice in currently practicing public health nurses.

  6. Activities to support this aim will include:

The project will be guided by an advisory committee of representatives from academic programs and public health agencies.
